SEASIDE CELEBRATES 35 YEARS!

This past January was Seaside’s 35th Anniversary! It may be difficult to remember the days when County Road 30A wasn’t packed with summer homes.  But there was a time,  a few decades ago when it was just sand and beautiful water.  Monica Market and Bud & Alley’s were in the middle of it all, and they are still here!

The idea of Seaside started in 1981 with the notion of reviving Northwest Florida’s building tradition, wood frame cottages, sleeping porches and lots of windows for cross ventilation. A sensible beach town that would have all the neccessities and pleasures of daily existence within walking distance of one’s residence.

Robert Davis, Seaside founder said, “we just wanted to create a place for people who want to share time and not just let time rush by.” Today downtown Seaside incorporates an array of delightful restaurants and interesting shops.  Now there are more than 480 homes, many of which are available for rent.Toes in sand

Whether it is for a weekend, a week, or a lifetime, Seaside must be savored long enough to let time slow down and allow cares to float away on the beautiful blue-green water.

COASTAL LIVING FEATURES INLET BEACH

Coastal Living editors love this area! They actually featured Seaside on their first magazine cover nearly 20 years ago. They have been featuring this area’s shopping, dining, events, and beaches ever since. Did you know that Florida has the most subscribers to Coastal Living than any other state. So if you chance to pick up the December issue, you will find articles about Florida wildlife, collectibles, recipes and great Florida inspired Christmas decor. Especially the article called “Blue Christmas” which features a lovely beach home in Inlet Beach! (I know it’s a little late, but there’s always next year!)

Hurricane Party at Bud & Alley’s

The 8th annual Hurricane Party will be held at Bud & Alley’s in Seaside

on September 21. Doors will open at 6 o’clock with drinks and hors d’oeuvres. There will be a live and a silent auction with all proceeds from the event being donated to the Children’s Volunteer Health Network, Inc. Tickets are $60 in advance or $75 the day of the event.

In 2005, the Children’s Volunteer Health Network was forming their organization when Hurricane Katrina hit and many people were evacuated. When possible, the locals returned, along with many people from New Orleans – giving the first fundraiser for CVHN the Hurricane Party. The party has become a wonderful tradition in South Walton County and is a great way to enjoy super food and entertainment while contributing to an excellent cause.

CVHN is an organization that provides medical, mental health and dental care to area children that are without insurance or funds. Volunteer medical professionals volunteer their time and expertise to this very worthy cause and have treated many children since the organization’s inception. They depend on fundraisers and donations to operate and to be able to continue their work for children. Please consider contributing to CVHN by attending the Hurricane Party at Bud & Alley’s in Seaside!

Seaside’s Food Trucks

when vacationing along 30A. Morning, noon, or night, whenever I go by the Seaside food trucks they are always busy with happy folks who are looking for something fantastic to eat.The trucks are actually vintage Airstreams that sit in a row across the street from the beach in Seaside and serve up a great variety of food and drinks that cater to everyone’s tastes. The Airstreams seem to add a fun element to Seaside – the town just wouldn’t br the same without them. Want to know more about the offerings they provide for hungry vacationers? Read on.

Barefoot BBQ is one of my personal favorites for meat that is hormone free, steroid free and antibiotic free. All produce is organic and local. We usually get the chicken BBQ sandwich which comes with two sides. I can tell you that their potato salad is amazing. Whenever I drive past Barefoot BBQ, I always slow down to get a whiff of the meats that they smoke on location. What an appetite builder!

The Melt Down is known for making the world’s best grilled cheese sandwiches. Not just ordinary grilled cheeses – -they put out ones filed with goat cheese, prosciutto,arugula and tomato. They also have roasted tomato soup and grilled pimento cheese sandwiches. Raw & Juicy serves organic juice smoothies, healthy snacks, like a black bean and avacado salad that is well loved. The owner also runs the Seaside Farmer’s Market each Saturday.

Wild Bill’s Beach Dogs are made with grass fed beef hot dogs and pasture raised turkey dogs. They also have a brat dog with grilled onions and special mustard. Frost Bites is very busy after folks have spent the day at the beach and are looking for something cold and refreshing for the walk home. They serve Hawaiian shaved ice, frozen custard and freshly squeezed lemonade and is very popular with the kids.

Seaside, Florida is the unofficial ‘downtown’ of 30A. Seaside

Seaside, Florida

is always buzzing – morning, noon, or night. It is a picture perfect town that was planned so that residents can get to all it has to offer – restaurants, shops, galleries, friends and neighbors, on foot or by bicycle. Each morning Seaside is active with people who are out running, walking their dogs, meeting for breakfast of coffee, people watching, or simply meeting and greeting others who are enjoying the morning .I like to get coffee at Modica Market and take it to one of the benches in Ruskin Place to bask in the beauty and serenity that surrounds me. It’s a very nice way to begin the day.

Seaside is filled with beachgoers as the day progresses and it’s nice to see everyone walking to the beach for an afternoon of swimming and relaxing in the sun. How nice it is that  families can break for lunch or snacks and have Seaside’s restaurants so close to the beach. The airstreams are busy keeping everyone fed and happy, and there are always people enjoying themselves at Bud and Alley’s which looks right out onto the Gulf. During the evening, Seaside is aglow with outdoor lights, making it seem magical. People are milling about, walking with their families or taking in an outdoor concert or performance. Again, it is so nice to end the evening with a stroll on the beach, looking at the starry sky and listening to the surf. How perfect!

Seaside was the first of its kind and created the model for New Urbanism in the United States. It was planned and executed with narrow streets, picket fences and homes tightly knit to promote a community feel. The outdoor ampitheater is a perfect gathering spot for productions, or a great place for a pick up soccer match. The town has its own tiny Post Office and its own charter middle school.

Some landmarks in Seaside are Bud and Alley’s restaurant, Central Square, Sundog Books, Modica Market, Ruskin Place, Perscipacity outdoor shops and the Airstream eateries. Be sure to park the car and explore this wonderful little town.

Lovers of Seaside

There is a couple who are such tremendous lovers of Seaside

that they have named one of their children Davis, after Robert Davis, Seaside’s founder. The couple married in Destin in 2006 and honeymooned at Seaside.  Their honeymoon was their first visit to Seaside and they had a wonderful time while they were in town. They had heard about Seaside from a college roommate who had been there and talked about the town so much that Seaside went on the couple’s ‘to do’ list. They fell in love with the town and created many cherished memories while honeymooning.

The next year their first son was born, so they didn’t have an opportunity to revisit Seaside for a couple of years. When they were able to make the trip back to Seaside, they were expecting their second son and wanted to give him a special name with a Seaside significance. Research showed them that Robert Davis was the town’s founder and they decided to name their second son Davis! They are hoping that they will get to meet Robert Davis at some point and talk with him about the town and their wonderful experiences there. I hope the family will return to Seaside often and make their visits a tradition that will continue through the generations!

Joining Hands Across the Sand

Joining hands across the sand is a peaceful protest of offshore drilling and is set for August 4 at noon at three locations on 30A. At noon, people around the world will gather at Hands Across the Sand events to take hands and ask local, national and international leaders for clean energy now. This is a symbolic gesture to say “no” to offshore drilling and “yes” to clean energy. It is a way to raise awareness and show our government that the people want a better future for our country and for our children.

Hands Across the Sand was founded in 2009 by Bud & Alley’s owner David Rauschkolb. It is a non-profit, nonpolitical organization that aims to raise awareness for the replacement of fossil fuel energy with renewable energy sources such as the wind and the sun. Rauschkolb loves to swim, surf and to fish and wants to do what he can to protect the Gulf of Mexico.

There are now 1,000 events in 50 states and 46 countries. You are invited to attend this year’s event right here on 30A. People will be joining hands at Ed Walline , Blue Mountain Beach or Seaside on August 4. Plan to gather at 11a.m. and hands will be taken up at noon for 15 minutes.
